Hugh owns and farms a dairy support property at Alford Forest on the upper plains of Mid Canterbury. He is married with two adult daughters. He is a masters rower and marathon trail runner. Hugh is a director of MRB.

Hugh works principally as a farm adviser with sheep, beef and mixed farmers. He supervises a portfolio of farms for corporate and private clients. He has carried out farm financial analysis for a series of irrigation schemes such as Ruataniwha and Central Plains, coordinated policy contracts including MPI Farm Monitoring and currently runs a discussion group in the Mayfield area.
